Ave Maria – Hiding Places

img_0854

The carved space in this beautiful reclaimed barn wood block makes a window for the Blessed Mother’s portrait and a retreat for your thoughts and prayers. The painting consists of layers of pigmented beeswax (encaustic) and is finished with a line drawing and rich brown stain. Under her portrait the long carved space is filled with pigmented encaustic and coated with Gold leaf. Over the groove is affixed a ladder made out of jute and branches, a symbol for your ascending prayers.
The block measures 7″x 12″ x 2″ deep, can hang on the wall or rest on a shelf. The barn wood block is beautiful from any angle and the natural element gives it a wonderful presence.

Prayer – an original encaustic mix media artwork, made by assembling 9 smaller artworks: graphite drawings and etchings on paper, finalized with layers of translucent encaustic painting and a fine line drawing combined with stain for a beautiful patina.
The wood panel (black finish) measures 12.75″ x 12.75″.

Reconstructions – Waiting

Reconstructions-Waiting, mixed media encaustic

Another artwork from my latest mixed media series, a combination of photography, drawing and encaustic on multiple paneled surface.
The amazing qualities of the encaustic (pigmented beeswax) give a new dimension to the image. The artwork consists of 19 wood panels- the overall installation measures around 35″x 48″.
The image is pieced together, not all the parts are revealed, giving it the wonderful feel of a reconstructed image, rediscovered. Also the organization of the multiple panels gives the artworks a wonderful dynamism in spite of the very static, almost frozen image.

The empty square in the chest area of the depicted feminine figure suggest that the heart is someplace else, given.

Starting with a photograph, I mount it on wooden panels and paint on top of it with layers of pigmented beeswax, obtaining a slightly textured surface. The artwork is finished with fine line drawings on top of the beeswax painting and a layer of ebony stain.

The artwork is available for purchase in the store.
